Business not showing on Google Maps: causes and fixes
Your business does not appear on Google Maps, or only when someone types in the name? The causes can be checked one by one. Most of them can be fixed with a little patience.

In short: If your business is not showing on Google Maps, it is usually for one of three reasons: the profile is not verified, it has been suspended for a policy violation, or Google has classified it as a duplicate. If the business appears when you search for its name but not when you search for the trade, that is not an error but a question of ranking. Check the causes in this order.
How to create and maintain a profile is covered in our article create and maintain a Google Business Profile. This article is about troubleshooting when the profile exists but cannot be found. It is based on Google's help pages. As of October 2026; Google occasionally renames its menus.
First clarify: not visible at all, or just further down?
“Not found” can mean two things, and the solutions are completely different:
- Not visible at all: even someone who types in the exact business name and town finds no listing. Then something is usually wrong with the profile itself: verification, suspension or duplicate.
- Only visible when searching by name: anyone searching for “Muster Painting Mödling” finds you, anyone searching for “painter Mödling” does not. The profile works, it is just not shown near the top for trade searches. That is a question of ranking.
According to Google, you find your own profile by signing in with the linked Google account and searching for “my business” or for the name and town. Also check what customers see without signing in, for example in a private browser window.
Cause 1: the profile is not verified
According to Google, only verified businesses can have their information shown on Google Maps and in Google Search. If verification was never completed, for example because the postcard did not arrive or a verification video was missing, the profile stays invisible. You can see the status in your profile. The available verification methods are described in our article on the Business Profile.
Even after verification, patience is needed: according to Google, it can take up to a month for a new business to appear in the rankings. Changes to an existing profile can take up to three days (Google Help: find your business on Google).
Cause 2: the profile is suspended
If a profile violates the guidelines, it is disabled or suspended. It is then not publicly visible, and owners can no longer edit anything in the profile. A notification is sent to the linked Google account. The guidelines themselves name possible triggers: for example keywords or places in the business name, or an address where there is no business with customer contact, such as a virtual office.
According to Google, this is how to proceed (Google Help: suspended or disabled profiles):
- Bring the profile in line with the guidelines. An appeal requires the profile to comply with all guidelines.
- Select the profile in the appeals tool. It shows the date, the reason, the policy violated and whether an appeal is possible.
- Upload evidence, such as a business registration, a tax certificate or an electricity or phone bill. The name and address on them must match the profile.
- Submit the appeal and wait for the decision by email.
An appeal can only be submitted once; after a rejection, a further review with additional evidence is possible. Important: do not create a new profile for the same business. If the whole Google account is restricted, all its profiles are suspended. In that case, first have the account restriction lifted and then appeal for each profile.
Cause 3: Google thinks the profile is a duplicate
Only one profile is allowed per business. According to Google, profiles classified as duplicates are shown neither in Google Search nor on Google Maps. This happens, for example, if there is already a verified profile for the same business, if several profiles have the same address, or if a business creates a separate profile for each service (Google Help: duplicate profiles).
- Moving premises: change the address in the existing profile; do not create a new one.
- Several services: list them all in the same profile.
- Two listings for the same business: request a merge in Google Maps via “Suggest an edit”. The reviews are combined; replies to them may be lost.
- Someone else manages the profile, such as a former agency or a former employee: request access from the owner. They have three days to respond.
- Two companies at one address: each may have its own profile if it has its own name and clearly distinguishable signage. If one of them is wrongly classified as a duplicate, Google requires proof of permanent signage on which both can be seen for the appeal.
Careful when deleting: if a profile is removed, all its content is lost. So make sure you remove the right one.
Cause 4: the profile is visible, but far down
If people only find you by name, ranking decides. According to Google, three things count above all in local results (Google Help: local ranking):
- Relevance: how well the profile matches the search. Complete details help, especially the right category.
- Distance: how far your business is from the searcher. Someone searching two towns away is often shown other businesses. You cannot change that.
- Prominence: measured, among other things, by links from other websites and by the number and rating of reviews.
According to Google, better ranking cannot be bought. What helps are complete, up-to-date details, photos, replies to reviews and the same company details everywhere online. More on this in the article local SEO and AI visibility.
Businesses without premises specify a service area instead of the address, with no more than 20 towns, postcodes or areas within about two hours' drive (Google Help: service area). That does not mean a top position in every town of the area.
Cause 5: wrong details you did not enter
Sometimes the profile is visible but shows wrong opening hours or an old phone number. Google receives suggested edits from users and can update information from other sources. For some suggestions you are notified in advance and then have four days to accept or reject them. If you do not respond, Google may publish the change if other public information, such as your website, supports it. Information changed by Google is marked in blue in the profile editor (Google Help: Google updates).
The conclusion: do not ignore notifications about your profile, and keep your own website up to date. If it still shows the old number, it counts against you.
The move that made the business invisible
This case is constructed, but typical. A joinery moves into a new workshop. Instead of changing the address in the profile, the owner's son creates a new profile because he has no access to the old account. Shortly afterwards, neither of the two can be found: the new one counts as a duplicate, the old one shows the former address, where it is reported as closed.
This is how to clean it up: recover access to the old account via Google's account recovery or request access from the owner. Change the address in the old profile and remove the second profile created by mistake. Mount a permanently fixed sign with the business name at the new workshop, exactly as it appears in the profile. Then align the details on the website, vehicle and printed matter.
In our view: the sign is part of troubleshooting
We make signs and vehicle graphics, and many profile problems lead back to the sign. According to Google, a business that shows its address in the profile needs a permanently fixed sign with the business name there. A shop without clear, permanently visible signage does not count as a storefront for Google and is treated like a service-area business (Google Help: service area). And if two companies share an address, the sign is the proof that there really are two.
That is why, when in doubt, we first check whether profile, sign, website and invoice show the same name and address. That does not solve every problem. But it takes away one reason for Google to doubt the business. We make suitable signs under signage.
Checklist: check one step at a time
- Do you find the business without signing in when you enter the name and town?
- Is the profile verified? If so, since when? Under a month, patience is needed.
- Is there a notification about a suspension or restriction in the Google account?
- Is there a second listing for the same business, for example under the old address?
- Is the category right, and are the details complete?
- Have you overlooked open suggested edits or details marked in blue?
- Are name and address the same on profile, sign, website and invoice?
If you get stuck, Google's support or the community in the Google Business Profile Help can help. Nobody can guarantee when and where a profile will appear, including us.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I find my business on Google Maps?
The most common reasons: the profile has not been verified yet, it has been suspended for a policy violation, or Google has classified it as a duplicate. In these cases it is not visible at all. If the business appears when you search for its name but not when you search for the trade, it is not an error but a question of ranking.
How long does it take for a new profile to appear on Google Maps?
A profile only becomes visible after verification. According to Google, it can then take up to a month for a new business to appear in the rankings. Changes to an existing profile can take up to three days.
Should I create a new profile if my old one has been suspended?
No. Google explicitly advises against creating a new profile for the same business. The right way is to appeal via the appeals tool after you have brought the profile in line with the guidelines. A second profile would itself count as a duplicate.
