Car wraps in Austria: do you have to register or report them?
A new colour, company graphics, a chrome delete: what the authorities need to know is not regulated in a single sentence in Austria. We show what the sources say, and where in the end the registration office gives the answer.

In short: As a rule, a wrap does not have to be entered in the vehicle's approval document in Austria. The transport ministry's list of modifications treats a change of the base colour without an entry, but notes “report to the registration office”. Whether a wrap counts as a change of the base colour is not explicitly stated. Anyone changing the colour of their car with film should therefore ask the registration office beforehand. Advertising stickers that do not affect road safety have no consequence. And some films are not allowed on a vehicle at all.
First: this article is guidance, not legal advice. What applies in an individual case is decided by the authority. We set out what the sources say, as of October 2026.
What the Motor Vehicles Act says
Two provisions of the Austrian Motor Vehicles Act (KFG) matter for modifications. Section 33(1) KFG requires changes that can affect road and operational safety or environmental compatibility to be reported to the provincial governor without delay. Section 42(1) KFG requires any change affecting official entries in the registration certificate to be reported within one week. A wrap is not explicitly mentioned in either provision.
What the ministry's list of modifications says
A list from the transport ministry is more specific: “Structural modifications to vehicles”, as of 12/2015. It is an annex to a decree and is meant to help experts with questions about vehicle modifications. It is not a law, but it shows how the authorities classify modifications. It can be found on the ministry's page on vehicle modifications (in German). Three points in it concern films:
- Change of the base colour: no entry in the approval document, but with the note “report to the registration office”.
- Stickers that do not affect road and operational safety: no consequence, i.e. neither an entry nor a report.
- Graphics that can affect road and operational safety: have to be entered in the approval document.
What this means for a wrap
- New colour with film: the list speaks of a change of the base colour without saying whether paint or film is meant. Anyone wrapping their car in a different colour should ask the registration office beforehand whether a report is needed. It takes one phone call and brings clarity. More on full wraps in the article full car wrap.
- Company graphics: logo and contact details usually do not change the base colour and do not affect safety, as long as number plate, lights and reflectors stay free. More in the article company vehicle stickers.
- Partial wrap and chrome delete: a black roof or black trim concerns individual parts; the vehicle's base colour remains visible. The list does not say where the line lies. If large areas get a new colour, ask the registration office if in doubt. More in the articles partial car wrap and chrome delete.
- Paint protection film: transparent protective film does not change the colour. More on our page paint protection film.
What is not allowed on a vehicle
- Number plate, lights, reflectors: stay free and fully visible. The details are in the article company vehicle stickers.
- Red fluorescent or retroreflective stripes: Section 20(8) KFG prohibits horizontal stripes of this kind across the entire rear or side wall above a certain height, and any such stripes at all if the vehicle could thereby be confused with a public security service vehicle.
- Windows: separate, strict rules apply to films on windscreen, side and rear windows. They are covered in the article rear window stickers in Austria.
Insurance and leasing
Whether a wrap is covered by your insurance and what is paid in the event of damage is stated in the terms of your contract. There is no general answer. Ask before wrapping, especially for a full wrap.
With a leased vehicle, the lease contract also applies. What applies at return is stated there. More in the article wrapping a leased car.
Silver becomes matte black
The case is made up, but typical. A silver car is to be fully wrapped in matte black. Before the appointment, the owner calls the registration office and asks whether the new colour has to be reported. Then they contact their insurer and ask whether the wrap is covered in the event of damage. Together this takes less than half an hour. Afterwards they know where they stand, instead of finding out after a roadside check or an accident.
Conclusion: one phone call instead of guessing
The sources point in a clear direction: as a rule, a wrap does not have to be entered, but according to the list of modifications a new base colour should be reported. Three steps before a colour change:
- Ask the registration office whether the new colour has to be reported.
- Ask your insurer whether the wrap is covered.
- With a lease, check the contract.

Frequently asked questions
Does a car wrap have to be registered in Austria?
As a rule not in the approval document. The transport ministry's list of modifications treats a change of the base colour without an entry, but notes a report to the registration office. Whether a wrap counts as a change of the base colour is not explicitly stated in the list. So ask the registration office before a colour change. This is guidance, not legal advice.
Do I have to report company graphics?
Stickers that do not affect road and operational safety are listed without consequence, i.e. neither an entry nor a report. Graphics that can affect safety, by contrast, have to be entered. Number plate, lights and reflectors stay free. If in doubt, the authority decides.
Do I have to inform my insurer about a wrap?
That depends on your contract. Whether a wrap is covered and what is paid in the event of damage is stated in your insurer's terms. Ask before wrapping, then you know where you stand.
